Building your own Pet Stairs?

Posted December 20th, 2009 by admin

I have a small 4 yr old Yorkie, and he is having problems jumping up on some peices of furnture, like my bed, he trys and trys then will bark untill i lean over and pick him up. and he always seems to do that around 4 in the morning..

So to solve this problem, I was going to build some pet stairs….I DO NOT WANT TO BUY ANY..so please don’t tell me to just buy it. I want to build them, but i was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to build it. Like any contractors or whatever, how do u recomend i make them they dont’ have to be but 3 feet tall or so. Any tips on materials to use…or websites that tell u how to build it..or anything would be greatly appreciated…Thanks!
i dont’ have a problem picking him up with my hands..thank you….the problem i have is when he barks at 4 in the morning

There seems to be fairly good instructions at this web site – http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/23798/pet_steps_indoor_stairs_you_can_build.html

why not build an elevator. Seems like your obsessed about your dog too much. Don’t you recall having hands to pick him up ? Thats the easiest way.

We have a pug and use a sewing box for that purpose. I was looking into getting steps but re-upholstered an old sewing box instead. I increased the height of the box by adding padding to the top of the box. He jumps on the box then up onto the bed.
It looks nice and also will hold things inside the box.

I have the same problem with my dogs. I have 3 Shih Tzu’s. I really don’t want to pay the price that these steps go for but I did see an alternative. On this website, you’ll see that their steps are made of foam. What a brillant idea. You can get foam blocks from your local craft store. Check it out here:

    Hope this helps…

Put something next to your bed, like a sturdy box that he can jump on and then he can jump on up to your bed. Unless your bed is very high I don’t think you need stairs. Just find something inbetween and teach him to use it.
