he only gets on our one couch. he doesnt get on the beds or our love seat or the chairs. i normally do not mind if my dog is on the couch and i have let past dogs lay on the couch, but this paticular dog licks the couch cushions which is, well kind of gross. not all of my cushions can come off to clean very well.

right now i set up tv trays on the sofa to keep him off which works. can anyone offer a better method?

he is about a year and a half old and we have only had him a couple months. i think he might have been allowed on the couch at the previous home as he jumped right up to the couch the second he came in ours.

talk sternly not mad but stern then if it keeps happening show him whose "boss"
i always say "down"sternly and if this dont work i pick him up then place him on the floor and say stay down

Just Tell him "down" and kinda ease him off the couch and he will eventually learn to get down

You can buy "Dog Away" or "Bitter Apple" sprays. The Bitter Apple works great for dogs who want to chew or lick things they aren’t suppose to. It has a disgusting taste dogs hate, and it shouldn’t ruin your furniture. Anytime your dog jumps on the couch, grab him by his collar, pull him off the couch and firmly say NO or DOWN. You have to be consistent with this, because he probably won’t learn fast if you suspect he has been allowed on couches before.

    Best of Luck

You have to clearly define where you want him to sleep by making his bed welcoming and safe.

As for keeping him from getting on the sofa I always use noise. A quick, loud ‘no’ and then taking the dog off of the sofa works, also using an audio deterrent (such as an empty plastic bottle with a few stones and a few metal washers inside usually works) for when you are away from the room.

Within 14 days your dog will associate the sofa with an unpleasant sound and will give it a wide berth.

Remember though, you need to give your dog a clear message, so no encouraging him to jump up onto the sofa with you, or on your lap. Until your dog is used to not using the sofa, hugs, cuddles etc have to be on the floor.

My lab used to be a sofa surfer, but now sleeps on my feet (yes I said on) when I am in the chair or on the sofa. When we leave her alone none of the furniture interests her unless the baby is there and then she sits on the floor and rests her head on the sofa nudging the baby when she gets too close to the edge.

To this day, after keeping dogs for over 30 years, they still amaze me.

Buy and then spray "Dog Away" on the couch. This will keep your dog off the couch. It is sold in most Pet Stores.

Spray the couch with Bitter Apple, this will keep him from licking it. Or try this, it sounds kinda funny: We took a small piece of chain link and placed it in an empty soda can. Then, we went back to the remote method, except that we tied a string to the soda can and placed it barely balanced on the edge of the end table. If he moved the remote to make himself comfortable, BAM! The soda can dropped and made a loud noise. This BAM! woke me up several times in the middle of the night the first few days, but after that, the can and the sofa remained untouched. After about a week, we noticed that he was associating the remotes with the loud noise. He hasn’t gotten beck on the couch ever since then.
