I live in good area, but it is a college town. I have 2 small children and another on the way. I want my house to be protected. My hisband has a swing shift and he often works nights. I want a good guard dog that if needed would protect my family. but at the same time would be good family dog. I don’t care about size. We already have one dog but if somebody were to come into our house with a gun my dog would become his best friend. He loves everybody. And I want a dog for protection I would feel so much safer. But I want to make the right choice before picking a dog
I can’t get an alarm system bc we rent. I am a stay at home mom and my kids are only 1 and 2. And they couldn’t even accidently open the door bc I keep my doors locked at all times, and then I have locks the kids can’t reach just incase. I have had something happen to me before and I don’t want to risk it again and at the time we had an alarm system so they don’t always work according to plan.
I could careless if it was a purebred dog or not. We had a pitbull rot mix and she was the sweetest dog ever, but she had a brain tumor so we had no choice but to put her down. So I think I am finally ready to get another dog.

Doberman: Great guard dogs and great family pets, just make sure you 1) either get a puppy from a reputable breeder who breeds for temperament or 2) get an adult dog from the shelter that you know will do well with kids
Doberman Pinschers are, in general, a gentle, loyal, loving, and highly intelligent breed. Although there is variation in temperament, a typical pet Doberman attacks only if it believes that it, its property, or its family are in danger.

A Fila Brasileiro is a great family dog and guard dog and it needs no training, guarding comes natural to these dogs.
Here is some info on the breed:

My advice to you would be to get yourself a "watch" dog who will make a lot of noise if an intruder comes in. Usually a noisy dog is enough to deter a potential intruder.
A real guard dog is a big liability, because if one of your kids ever accidentally let it out of the house, it might attack people. Please think how dangerous it is to have a dog who is vicious to strangers.

What you need is a monitored alarm system with a loud siren.
It’s the biggest deterrent there is.
Sorry, but any dog, even the most protective is only a deterrent.

You don’t need a dog that will protect you, you need a dog that LOOKS like it will protect you. If anyone is likely to attack you when you have a large dog with you, you need more than the dog to protect you.
If your dog actually bites someone, you could get sued. Yes, even if they’re an intruder.

What you are looking for is a good deterrent. A dog that will keep someone from wanting to try to enter your house. GSD, Dobe, American Bulldog. All great deterrents and still good family dogs.
To Fishaholic, who said a dog who is trained to attack will get out and attack random people…get real! If a dog is trained in personal protection…really trained by a reputable trainer….it will NOT attack a non-threatening person. Learn what personal protection is about before making silly statements like that.

You might to do better to get your dog a little training,
it’s amazing what a little pee-on-your-foot family dog
can do if they think "their" family is being threatened.

You might check into some of the herding breeds. They serve as protection on stock out in the fields. Most of them are fairly super active & need space to run.
A dog is only a deterant, it can be shot, poisoned or led off on a wild goose chase. Some of the best ‘watch’ dogs are the small ones that yap at anything. At least you will be warned.
If you go looking for a pup get a more dominate dog. Ask the breeder for a hind teat pup.
But you might be better off getting an alarm system that will notify the police if there is a break in.
Every one on my street has been broken into with the exception of mine. I usually have 3 or 4 large dogs & word has got around that I trained Police dogs so not even my neighbors enter my yard unless I am there to let them in.
The dogs were trained as fence dogs so they make a great showing at the fence & gates. Two of them may have bit someone but they were never challenged.
One of my dogs did bite but with each situation she was always justified & animal control commended her on her actions. Kinda rare in this day & time. She was just a little mutt I rescued from the parking lot of a grocery store. Too mixed to even come up with a predominate breed.
I named her Little cause she was only 14 inches at her shoulders & much smaller than my other dogs.

Shepherd girl is right. A fila is the best answer an the best choice for you. It requires no training, and is naturally protective.
