Holy COW man!?

Posted July 31st, 2009 by admin

Has anyone sat down and added up what they spend on their dog annually?

there was a question on here about shots etc. and it got me thinking so i just added it up to see.
total i spend: 6.80 after my discount (i get a 10% multi-pet discount) yearly on 4 dogs. and that is not counting their flea prevention, or their spay/neuter from way back when, or any injuries or illnesses.
if i add in about 200 dollars for the extra expenses i spend roughly
786.80 on my dogs yearly…and that still doesn’t count food, toys, tags that get worn and need to be replaced, leashes and collar that get worn and need to be replaced, carpet sprinkle for the pet hair, my vacuum that i bought FOR the pet hair, beds, and the time it takes to walk, and train them.
….i love my dogs LOL so it’s all good, but..WOW. (i wont be adding up what i spend on my 2 legged kids, i dont need a heart attack!)

What do YOU spend annually?
OMG Nekai i dont even want to think what you spend yearly!!! but at least you’re doing that for a good cause ya know?!
Ulva Child- i feed Solid Gold too, i got through a 40lb back every 2 weeks. ((chuuuu-ching))
**gags on price tag** LOL but they love it!
oops, that should read-i GO through a 40lb BAG every 2 weeks.

agian, sprained wrist…imma blame typos on the wrist brace. LOL
Corso Lover!- and here i was thinkin’ i was pretty hot stuff w/my little multi-pet discount…Hmmm….wonder if my vet needs a dog walker. ((LOL))
Yo LO! ©- GEEBUS! LOL
LT- i hear ya! i have 1 credit card JUST for emer. vet care, and a savings account too.
i’ve only had to use it once (knock on wood) when my doxie/chi mix decided to crawl through the BROKEN back glass door after a storm. we had it blocked off w/wood. she jumped over it and into the house. the glass was only a few cm from cutting her eye! poor thing cut her face so deep she was in surgery for an hour.
Loki- oh YES you can!! we got our mini van for the dogs…(i do have 4, 2 legged kids, but 2 of them came AFTER the dogs!) lol

it counts.

    *vaguely deranged laughter*

Do I add in the Honda minivan (bought for the dogs) or the dog truck?

What about the mortgage payment on the house/land (bought for the dogs)…?

No? Well…still, I would guess maybe $8000-$10000 annually (including dog show entries, trips,etc.). Last year it was probably closer to $8K (no litters, not many shows due to my travel for work).

    *more weak cackling*

  2. ;)

I spent over $2500 on my dogs in the last two weeks of March. I don’t want to even think about what I spend annually. I would guess that vaccines and tags alone run over $1500.

Food (the highest quality on the market), vet bills, training, the list goes on and on.

    Truthfully, I don’t think I want to know :)

I have no idea… I’ve had my dog for roughly a year, so I’ll take an estimate. $200 for the adoption fee and $500 for vet visits, and I don’t even want to THINK about how much I have to add for toys, beds, and other stuff! And we can put a thousand or two in property damage.

    YIKES

omg i didn’t even read you entire ? i was afraid of the numbers. we have 3 dogs and i don’t even want to think about it. and my kids wanna know why they couldn’t go to Harvard lol.

  6. Nekai

You are SO lucky!! *laughing* :D

I spend a little over half of that monthly :(

No wonder I haven’t been able to make that trip to Hawaii… *sigh*

tell me about it. i’ve got two border collies. my almost 2 year old in vet bills alone i spent over 1,000 in shots, spaying etc. and now i’ve got a 6 month old that i’ve had since february and in vet alone probably over 1,000. then the food. 20 pounds of dry a week and a half $15 and thats puppy and adult food. plus the canned and then the treats and of course leashes and collars. its just like having kids. gotta take care of them and keep them healthy. so yea, i spend lots of money and thats not including my 2 parrots and cats and rabbits and fish and hamster and hedgehog oh then theres the kids and hubby lol. its never ending….

  8. Ulva Child

I would say more than £2000.
I am obsessed with Solid gold dog food and since it is not available in the UK i spend £60 on a 30lb bag which I get shipped over from the US.
    Plus bedding , toys, vets, chips, spay/neuter , 7 foot fences , 1 sand box , etc etc .

all i can say is it’s a good thing my hubby brings in over 1000.00 a week and we only pay 500 a month for rent and utilities. i can’t even begin to figure it out. i don’t have enough fingers and toes.
(should i include the 28 ft motor home we spent 6000.00 on last yr so they can go camping in style?)

GOOD LORD !!! TIMES 5!!!!!!!!!!!! i just did a rough figure of about 700.00 a month. but this includes sending my vet and the boarding kennel something every week "just in case". does not include toys.

LOL I work for a Vet, so I get all medical expenses for free and only have to buy food, collars, toys etc. I spend about 500-600 dollars a year. But I hear all the time clients complain about how they spend so much more on their dogs then they ever did on their kids! lol Those are always the good clients, the ones that would do anything for their beloved animals (like you) and we have a lot that just get the basics, Rabies shot once a year, a total of 12 dollars! grrr

  11. witchywoman

Times that by 10. Not including the 3 spays and dewclaws I am getting ready to have removed from our Rottie. Gotta love them.

I don’t even want to freaking think about it! My Pet-Sitter alone is $85 a WEEK for the 2 dogs!

Oh jeez…I did some quick math…Without Vet Care / shots (or the cost of the puppy I just bought), based on 50 weeks per year (A couple off for vacation/sick/whatever), I’m at $4800. That only includes $85 a week for care, $40 a month for food and $20 misc a month.

  13. LT

I figure around 1000.00 a year on each dog. I have two. But at the same time save money for emergencies. (which I had to use not long ago set me back 1200.) Thankful I thought of having the funds for this.

My dogs are older now so would have to recalculate the cost of new puppy or dog!

  14. Shanna

I added this up the other day, actually, and I about wet my pants. For 4 dogs I spend,
Vet Insurance premium per month: $180
    Kibble per month: $200
    Other food and supplements: $160
Toys, leashes, chews, treats, etc.: around $50 per month

That’s $590 a MONTH! Holy crap! And yearly that’s $7,080 and that’s if there are no emergencies or extra enpenses!!

Then add on yearly expenses like shots that my insurance doesn’t cover and I am sure it will go up to $7500.
No wonder I am poor, geez. Oh well, they are my favorite things in the whole world and so worth it.

  15. boxers_are_great

I don’t even want to know what i spend. I am guessing that in the last 10 years i have spent at least $300,000. This includes member fees, club fees, health testing, (prelim at 1 then most other tests done yearly.) Holters and echo with color doppler is not cheap when dealing with board certified cardiologists. But so worth it when your getting 1.8 flow rates and 0-13 VPC’s then we have entry fees, handler fees, hotel costs, traveling expenses, food, collars, grooming, leads, handling classes, training, evaluations, omg i could go on and on but i won’t since you get the point.

Oh boy thinking about this makes my head hurt.

  16. CoffeeCupDobie

Depends. If I was to pay for Kendalls parvo treatment it was well all total 3700 when said and done. But we got donations for it so we were able to breath a sigh of relief. Then we have the cocker showing that is 2000 a month and then some. and the vet bills and showing the other cocker in trials well that is 1000 a month for 3 months (3000 a year), then food well a year yeah ok we have 5 dogs at 35. * 4 * 12= to much but like you they like it. (we also get rescues in so that can go up or down depending)
Then treats, new beds, new crate this year, fencing, swimming pool cause they chewed up the old one and we now need 3 cause the cockers like to swim. (baby pools). then there are the chew toys, treats, and new leashes and collars. Yep… when I come back I want to be a dog. Spoiled rotten dog! Oh new brushes also as the rotten cockers got into the bucket today and ate thier brushes all up… yep they are cute…
cant put a price on the puppies though. I love them to much.

Edit I forgot the groomer!!! yep, wow how could I forget them we see them about every other week or every three weeks. yep two cockers (when our young one is home) at 45. a shot, yep, that includes tip (if its a good job lol). so add that in, yeah dont really want to do the adding… hope you get the idea. Starving artist heck starving pet owner! Well worth it though

  17. The more u no the less u dont no

Eddie: Probably around (big estimate) 950$ a year, not including toys, beds, stuffed animals replaced, training, etc.

Mika: after about 5 weeks we have spend roughly 500$, we had to pay for her injuries from the abuse she suffered, training, messes cleaned, etc.

Pretty bad, yes i know. But at 13 i only have to pay for toys, bedding, and spoiling for my dogs. I really dont want to add up all of what my parents pay. Probably about 1,000 a year or so….

    *Yikes*

    ADD:
Haha, I use Solid Gold food to, I forgot to add that, this is really bad, i dont want to think about it!

And these are only my dogs, I dont want to think about the cat, guinea pigs, or most scary, me and my 2 brothers and my baby cousin who visits us about 1 time a month. Plus Christmas, and holidays….OWWW!

  18. *Jordan M*

    Oy…. you don’t wanna know…

I’m not sure, I don’t want to add it up.

    Training
    Vetcare
    Quality food
    random crap they don’t need….

Ugh, that’s making me depressed, I’m not even going to list the amounts.
