How can I get my dogs to stay off the bed? HELP?

Posted May 15th, 2010 by admin

I have two adult dogs- a Boxer and a Shepard mix. I don’t like them being on my bed at any time. If my husband and I go to bed at the same time they will sleep on the floor in our room. If he goes to bed first they will wait until he falls asleep and get on the bed once he dozes off because they know it’s against the rules. I get so frustrated and I don’t know what to do.
Just now I went upstairs to find the boxer asleep on the bed- I got her off and said "Bad girl" and had her lay down on the floor. I went back up for something a few minutes later and she was back on there. Again I reprimanded her. So I pretended to go back downstairs and went back in the bedroom and there she was getting back on the bed.
Can someone please help me? If I go shower during the day, when I come out my dogs are on the bed.
Our bedroom doesn’t have a door, when you walk up the stairs you are in our room so there is no door to close to keep them out.
Please help me- I am at my wits end. I don’t know what to do. I am so frustrated with them. Please help
I should have mentioned that they do have beds of their own
My boxer is 4 and my Shepard is 2 1/2

I have to ask how old are they? Do you have crates/did you crate train them. It doesn’t surprise that these dogs want to be by your side at all times its what make them amazing breeds.

First of all, I always beg people not to hit or "tap" as people like to sugar coat it, being stern and consistent is the best approach to training them. If you have crates use them at night. A lot of people feel like dogs hate their crates but really they love them because it’s their own private space. What I did with my boxer was put his crate in the corner of my room for about 1 1/2 years then replaced it with a big bed. He transitioned quite nicely as it was located in his normal night time area. The last year or so (hes 5) I started letting him sleep on my bed but he knows that "Bed Kayne" means for him to lay in his corner.

pop them with a belt. I’m not saying beat them unconscious, but let them know you’re the boss. If you don’t have it in you to hit them, kennel training is GREAT! When they mess up, they go to the kennel for about ten minutes. Don’t leave them in there longer than that, because they forget why they’re in trouble.

put inflated balloons on your bed when you are not sleeping.

if the balloons pop they will scare the dog off the bed. if he gets on the bed the balloons move and scare the dog off the bed.

There probably getting up there cause the bed is softer than the floor, which doesn’t hurt their hips as much.
Try getting them their own beds and put them right beside yours (make sure there comfy). Encourage them to go onto their beds (like if they go from your bed to their bed, praise them). And try covering the beds with an old blanket and/or (if your able too) put a pillow inside/underneath the beds.

I had the same problem when dealing with my dog. My situation was a little different but the advice is the same.
The important thing is that you are consistent. Do not give up. Make sure that your boyfriend does the same thing so that the training will work.

What you do is every time you see the dog on the bed you say "OFF THE BED" say as a command not a favor. Then you grab the collar and take them off.

Then walk out for a few seconds, come back in and if they are on the bed do the same thing, if they are off pretend that nothing is happening because this should be a natural thing for them.
It should take a couple of days but if you both are consistent this is a easy job.

maybe put something they hate on the bed.

get a baby gate or a dog gate you can attach it or they have removable ones that wat thet can see you and you don’t need a door, but the gate is high enough to keep them out.

Baby gate at the bottom of the stairs. Sometimes it’s just easier to prevent problems rather than solve them. I have gate with a door that opens & closes easily- great investment!

mine is scared of the hair dryer! so find out what your dog is scard of so you actually place that thing on your bed so the doggiee won’t jump on bed when you’re not there.

You could try getting them there own beds. If they don’t seem so fond of sleeping on there own beds then you’ll have to get a door and close it when your not in your room so they won’t get on the bed.
