My girlfriend and I are discussing moving in together and while her 2 dogs normally sleep with her, we have agreed to train them to sleep on their own bed located in our bedroom once we live together. We need some training tips to help us with the transition.

Put the beds in her bedroom and if they attempt to get on the bed, tell them ‘no’ firmly. You will have to be persistent at first because sleeping on your girlfriends bed is a habit. Just keep doing this until they understand they are no longer allowed to sleep in her bed.

The sooner she starts doing this, the better. It will definitely be better if they are used to sleeping in their own beds before you move in because they may start to see you as the reason they can’t sleep in her bed anymore.

My husbands dog used to sleep in our bed.. Right between us preferably. I trained her to get off the bed (or anythign else) on command and then just kept commanding her off the bed every single time she got on it. She would just jump up there again (on the other side of him :P ) once we were both asleep for a long time but once he started doing it as well AND she had a nice new bed to sleep on (her old one is pretty beat up) she stopped even trying to get on the bed.

First off make sure your girlfriend is completely on board with this because if she lets them sleep in bed when you’re not there they will not think that the rules of the pack are enforced enough & they’ll think you’re a joke. Make sure she’s the alpha dog to her dogs.

Once you move in, get ready for bed as normal & if the dogs get in bed, grab them by the collar say "OFF" & push them (not hard though) off the bed. Continually do it ALL the time, NEVER don’t do it once b/c you’re tired. If you’re asleep & they climb on, kick’em off the bed (again, NOT HARD).
    That should do it.

Consistency from both of you is important. When the dogs go to their beds on the floor try giving them a treat. When they get back on your bed, give a correction and place them back in their own bed. They wil figure it out.
