How large of a bed does a 4 lb dog need?

Posted September 13th, 2011 by admin

I’m ordering a custom Pooch Pedic Cuddler Bed to get one that fits in my future dog’s car carrier. Her carrier is the small (for dogs up to 12 lbs) Komfort Climate Control Generation II. The measurements are 19"L x 13"W x 16"H so I want one side to be 13" but don’t know how long to make the other side. She was just born Fathers day and is charting to be 4 lbs but could maybe (hopefully) get to 6 or 7. I want to leave room for piddle pads in case of accidents and a food dish and spill proof water dish or small animal-style water bottle. Thanks!
Oh no I don’t intend for her to pee in it, but I will be picking up a ten week old puppy from Pennsylvania and driving her home to Virginia and accidents are likely to happen

You got your measurements you need & it should be fairly simple to choose a bed. You know not to get one to fit the size of a GSD.

I do not like crate training & recommend that you do not use one. I hate to see a little puppy sitting in his own sh*t & piss. Covered from head to toe. I think a crate is great for carrying an animal but not to lock them up in it.

Put the dog in a room with no carpet & use a child’s gate to keep it in there. You can also get a round pen & set it up. That pup is not going to know what the piddle pads are for. He may just chew them up & create an even bigger mess.

You should never let a dog pee in its crate. Instead, buy washable bedding. Pee pads should only be used in X-pens or the house area. When she’s in her crate, she is not allowed to go potty! That’s the whole purpose of the crate – it keeps the dog from peeing because they don’t want to pee their beds!

You can buy food and water dishes that hook onto the inside of the door, so get a bed that fits in the entire crate. If the crate is too big for her right now, block off some of it. I hope this is helpful!

A large shoe box and old blanket would work to. What are you going to do if this dog you don’t have yet won’t sleep in the fancy bed you are buying before you get the dog. I mean you have at least 10 weeks before you can even get the dog. So why get this fancy hi priced stuff now.
