How to train a cat to stay of the bed?

Posted September 8th, 2010 by admin

Our cat has taken into habit to sleep with us on the bed. While it is enjoyable, she does tend to track dirt from the street. We have a pillow for her to sleep near the bed, though she ends up climbing up on the bed in the middle of the night, or durign the day for naps.

How do we teach her to stay off the bed completely? Closing the door at night is not an option.
We’ve tried the squirt gun method – she’s simply runs away as soon as she sees us awake or noticing her. If we are unaware – she’s there.

the best thing i have ever tried is something called tattletale.. its this little motion sensor device that put off this really loud alarm when it sences an animal (or person) near it. get one and put it on the bed or even in the door way to your bedroom when you leave the house after enough attempts she will decide its not worth it and will stop trying.. ths wont help you at night immediatly cuz you obviously don’t want the alarm going off in your ear when you are tying to sleep but if use it every time you are not asleep she will stop even wanting to get on the bed.. you can find em at petsmart, pet co and even ebay, it worked for all 4 of my cats to keep them off my kitchen counters and is as humane as it comes

Well, if she crawls up, and your awake push her off and chase her out. If you catch her there, I would recommend using a long squirting water bottle and spraying her from a distance, so that she’ll associate getting on the bed with being squirted. :) works for me!

Get a cattle prod and zap her whenever you catch her on the bed.

Use a squirt gun on her when she jumps up. Keep it by the bed. I think this is the most effective but gentle way to train a cat.

Everytime the cat jumps on the bed, either:

Shake a can filled with coins
    Or
    Shake an empty plastic bag

They actually make little shoes and pads to go on pet’s feet to make sure they can’t track dirt inside look in your local grocery store.

smack it when its on the bed, she’ll soon stop
no its not cruel unless you have tree trucks for arms

find a room that no one sleeps in and introduce your cat to it. it might also be good to buy her a pet bed too, so she can be comfortable. every night lock her in the room when she doesn’t make a fuss praise her (example: give her a treat). if you don’t have a room like that, every time your cat jumps in your bed either kick her off or squirt her with a spray bottle of with until she stops getting on the bed. you can also distract her with something more interesting than your bed. eventually your cat will learn that your bed is off limits!! this all worked for me!!:)

You don’t "train" a cat- you try to make it their idea. If you make the bed immediately when you get up and then throw another washable cover over the top; it should reduce the amount of dirt. Is this the 1st cat you have owned? They have their own agenda and you are merely a convenience. Dogs have owners- cats have staff. Good luck & God bless. Love you.

My cat gets on my bed as well, she likes to head-butt me when i am asleep and once I wake up she rubs all over my face and purrs. Needless to say I am not getting any sleep. I think she thinks it’s a game. So what I have been doing is rubbing some cat-nip on her pillow and the scent draws her to it. she rubs all over the pillow and not me. I have put a little cat-nip inside the pillow to keep the scent. When she does jump on the bed.. i tell her "NO" and she looks at me like I am an idiot but gets down and goes to her pillow and rubs and purrs. I tell her good girl and pet her. No praise on the bed, praise on the pillow, she is getting the idea quickly.
