Introduce a dog to my 14 year old cat?

Posted May 14th, 2010 by admin

I have a 14 year old cat who does not like other animals around – dogs or cats. She will pee to mark her territory, usually around my bed!
I once had a dog who was already here when she entered the household as a kitten, so she didn’t mind him. I would like to
adopt a small, young adult dog. How can I help her accept a new pet?

Since you know she doesn’t like other animals and you know she will "mark" if they come in, why in the world would you want to stress her out just to bring in a small dog that she will hate? Let her live in peace as an only cat – then after she is gone, adopt a dog.

You cannot and doing this will be showing a lack of caring for this cat as you have no clue how your cat would react. it can change her and make her miserable for the rest of her life. Sorry for the bluntness but nit is a serious subject

Simply agree with the others: why disturb the cat and let her feeling bad?
I understand that you want to have a dog too, but being a little bit ironic:
would you respect the wish of a bf/ gf to have another partner too without any "marks"?

I think loving always includes also the part of respecting and standing behind.
And in that case I think it isn“t so hard to do that.
Why to pressure something when you know that it will come to a bad end?
Then you will have to decide at least who should stay.
Think that makes live not easier for you.
In the end one of them will leave your home and you will feel guilty.
But I think you have done right: First ask and then do, before doing and then asking.
