Be careful when researching pet insurance – there are some big differences between pet insurance and health insurance for people. There are of course monthly premiums to pay, and depending on the age of your cat and the level of coverage you choose, it will cost you $20 or more per month. There are things that are NOT covered, and here is where you need to read carefully and ask questions. But the biggest difference between insurance for people and insurance for pets is how it’s paid. With people, you show them your insurance card, and you get billed later. It doesn’t work that way for pet insurance – you pay the vet, then submit the paperwork to be reimbursed from the insurance company. VPI is one of the big, legitimate companies. Look them up online.

Owning pets isn’t cheap. Veterinary care is something we are obligated to provide, expensive or not. That is all part of having a pet.

I got my pet insurance through my vet. I figured if he trusted them enough to have their brochures in his office then they must be reputable. Be sure that what the company is offering, is what you need…just like buying insurance for yourself. There are premiums and perhaps a co-pays, just as with insurance for people, but it my be more affordable than paying for vet bills. Talk with the office manager at your vet’s and I am sure they can help you…they won’t mind because the vet is going to be paid whether you pay him yourself or he is paid through the insurance company.
