Looking for a pet dog, need some advice?

Posted November 29th, 2009 by admin

I am looking for a dog as a PET ONLY. I don’t really care about pure breeds… this dog will be sleeping in my bed with my wife and I and maybe someday our son or daughter. I want a small to medium sized dog preferable short hair or a long hair that doesn’t shed much. I do plan on having kids so what ever breed it is it MUST be good with kids. I hear Mastiffs are great with kids but are a bit bigger then I want haha. Again this will be an inside dog and the wife absolutely doesn’t want a dog that sheds a lot! Also just to make animal lovers feel better I do have a yard

If you want a great family pet look into shelters or rescues near you and see what they have. Go to petfinder.com. Search your area and medium sized dog. Look at the description of the dogs. From my experience rescues tend to do better personality and temperament testing than shelters since rescues have less dogs and the dogs are kept in foster homes so they can see the dog’s real personality.

Wheaten Terriers are the only purebred that I can think of that fits all your criteria. They are a medium sized dog, that is considered ‘non shedding’. They are good with children, but make sure you socialize them with children when they are young so that you can be sure they will always be good with children. If you rescue, then make sure you ask if the dog has been tested around children.

Here are two websites about wheatens:

    http://www.breederretriever.com/dog-breeds/216/soft-coated-wheaten-terrier.php

The picture on breeder retriever isn’t a very good picture in my opinion, wheatens are usually cuter than that.

If a wheaten is what you think you want than search wheaten rescues in your area. If not, then go to a shelter and see what you like.

    Good luck!
