I am looking for a dog as a PET ONLY. I don’t really care about pure breeds… this dog will be sleeping in my bed with my wife and I and maybe someday our son or daughter. I want a small to medium sized dog preferable short hair or a long hair that doesn’t shed much. I do plan on having kids so what ever breed it is it MUST be good with kids. I hear Mastiffs are great with kids but are a bit bigger then I want haha. Again this will be an inside dog and the wife absolutely doesn’t want a dog that sheds a lot! Also just to make animal lovers feel better I do have a yard

Getting The Best Dog Bed
If you own a dog, especially an older one, getting a good dog bed is a really great gift to give your beloved pet. The need a good place to rest and sleep just like us. After all, you wouldn't want to bed down in an uncomfortable mattress or sleep on a hard surface all night.
Sleeping on the floor or even on a bad or uneven bed isn't the best thing for a dog to do. As they get older it becomes even more important that they have a really good dog bed to sleep in.
The other reason to get a dog bed is, of course, to keep them off of yours or off of the best couch in the house. If you don't want them all over your furniture, get them a comfortable bed of their own that they will love and use for a long time.
From the simplest dog beds to the more elaborate types, there are many to choose from. Some are more or less like large bean bags, some are donuts or round pet beds. There are also bolster dog beds, which have sort of a pillow going all around the outer edge of the bed. Dogs like to use this as a pillow for their head while they sleep. Then there is the orthopedic dog bed and memory foam beds, which are among the best you can get.
There are also outdoor dog beds which are made for outdoor areas like the back porch and there are also heated dog beds. These are great for dogs, especially during the cold winter months. Even when you have the heat in the house cranked up, the floor can sometimes stay cold and it's not good for your dogs bones and joints. A heated dog bed will keep your canine pal comfy and warm the whole time like a warm blanket.
Another option you may want to look into is getting a waterproof dog bed. We have all taken our dog out for a walk when it is raining and wet outside. Whether we want to or not, we have to go out on those miserable days when the rain is pouring and we both get soaked. After a good towel dry, dogs still have some moisture left on their coat and skin. The nice part about a waterproof dog bed is that your dog can lay on this type of pet bed without getting it soaked on the inside where the water stays put. These beds are made for this so they do not get ruined every time your water soaked pooch rests on them. For those dogs that prefer to stay out on the porch or outside near their kennel or dog house, they are much happier on a waterproof bed than a conventional one that soaks up the water. It's not only a comfortable resting spot for sleeping and lying down, but it will last longer too.
Not all dog beds are the same just as not all dogs age the same. When your dog gets older, he or she will most likely develop the same types of aches and pains due to joint problems that humans do. When your dog starts to slow down due to joint pain, inflammation and arthritis, the best thing you can do is to look into getting them a memory foam dog bed.
As soon as your are aware that you dog is suffering from orthopedic issues, the floor is simply not a good place for them to sleep. Even a conventional dog bed just will not do. The even balance of a dog's weight is more important at this stage of their life than at any time before. A bumpy or uneven bed is not good for the existing joint pain and can actually worsen the dog's problems over time.

Well I personally like Papillons cuz they are great family dogs but you have to watch out for matting in their fur – but from what I’ve researched they don’t shed a lot. check them out – very cute dogs!

You don’t really care for purebreds, so I think shelter or rescue is the way to go for you.
Since you’re really getting down to specifics here, I recommend looking at your local rescues (search "dog rescue [insert zip code]" on google search) and emailing them with your requests. They’re bound to have a dog that’s right for you.
Never, ever buy a puppy from people who breed mutts ("maltipoo", "pomchi", "labradoodle", "goldendoodle", etc) purposely. There are millions of dogs out there who need homes, and by supporting these BYBs, you’re fueling the operation.
Hope I helped, and good luck with your future dog!

I would look on Petfinder.com and search your area. The site has 100s of great dogs.

All dogs shed except poodles. some more than others but you cant get away from the hair. haha.
Shelter dogs are all great. If you plan on having children its just about introducing them correctly. if you get an older dog it will be less work but still work. if you get a puppy you will not so much be worried about shedding but pee everywhere and things being destroyed! Good luck.

Well i would say lab since they are the most gentle, loving dog…. when they are 3. when they are younger than 3 they are disasters. I don’t know if they shed but they are a great pillow and fun to snuggle with. I have a golden and a lad and every morning she goes up to me and lays next to me and keeps me warm… they are very good protectors for me when im home alone.

I know you said that you don’t care about the breed. But short hair labs are smart, loyal and great with kids. They make great family pets. They seem to have a very calm demeanor. Also, you can get a puppy from the humane society who has been placed in foster care. These dogs are usually well mannered and socialized with people, other pets and kids.
I got a dog from them, paid them $65 because he was already fixed and had all his shots. Best dog ever! Good luck..

I hear that Boxers are really good with children.
But I would recommend
Boston Terrier
Or a Poodle
Check your local shelter!!! Good luck!!

Personally I think going to a rescue group and adopting a Poodle or Poodle mix will be the best idea for you.
Poodles are low-shed. The flip side is that they require regular grooming.
Many terriers are also low-shed, however they can sometimes not be good with kids. Considering that you’re looking to have a baby at some time in the future, a terrier would not be my first recommendation.

Check out a West Highland White Terrier. They are a small but solid dog. They do not shed and they are reported to be excellent with children. Google non-shedding dogs and you will get quite a list.Socialize the pup with children now and when your children arrive he will be familar with them.

i think you should get a boston terrier. they are about 12-13 inches and they dont shed a lot. they are very smart and easy to train and terrific with kids. they will never bite. i have one myself and they are great dogs and my kids love him. they are funny dogs too. they can entertain you all day. you could buy them anywhere.

You have described my dog nearly to a T! He is 35lbs mixed beagle/shepherd/cattle dog, easygoing and playful, loves kids, and other pets, and people, low shedding, and overall the "perfect dog" and yep we got him from a shelter : ) He is our family member for life, but yes, like everyone says, go to the shelter or local dog pound and see what is there.

Cocker Spaniels are usually a medium sized dog who is very loyal. They do have long hair, but if you groom them, I don’t think you’ll be upset over the hair.
