My dog is having her puppies right now! What do I do?

Posted September 3rd, 2010 by admin

My dog is having her babies right now she is pushing and fluids are coming out. And she is not producing milk, I don’t want her puppies to die and its 12: 42 am. No pet store is open. I already have her bed made water and towels.
Is there anything else I have to do?

    If after the puppies come and start nursing she still doesn’t have milk you can always run to Walmart usually open 24 hrs they have puppy milk and baby bottles

    let her do her thing.

    She will produce milk when they start nursing so don’t worry just watch and be there in case she gets in trouble but it sounds like its going okay so far.

    Her body will do what it is supposed to. Just keep an eye on her, help her IF she needs it (like if she is busy cleaning the back of a puppy and the sac is still covering the mouth and nose, peel the sac away and turn the puppy around so she can get his face clean). Tomorrow, go to the pet store and buy some puppy milk, for the mother. It will help her replace nutrients she loses while nursing.
    And you will have some on hand to supplement with puppies if she isnt producing enough milk. GL!!

    Her milk will be in by the time the birthing process is complete. I worked for a vet for about 4 years, & have never heard of a dog not producing at all. It sounds like you have what you need. Try to stay calm, so you are able to keep your dog calm & comfort her during this exhaustive time for her. Relax!!! Nature will do all the work. The only thing you need to watch is that the mother open the sack. If she does not, you’ll have to do that, so the pups do not sufficate. Just rip it open, wipe them off, and rub the puppy from head to toes vigoriously until you see movement or hear them whimper a bit. Good luck with your litter.

    leave her alone..
    Keep checking on her though but dont’ hang out. Dogs have puppies all the time with no help from humans. (that is why we have too many dogs in our shelters)

    her teats fill with milk a few days before she gives birth, give her time, dont mess with her but maybe watch her contractions and pushing time make sure it dosent slow down usually its a puppy an hour. and im sure you didnt get her x-rayed to see how many pups to expect…..

    if nothing comes out and her contractions have slowed then she needs to see a vet ASAP!

    also how would a pet store help in this situation??

    If she does not have a pup within 6-7 hours, you need a vet..

    Don’t worry about the milk, that usually comes in as they have pups and even new borns do not have to eat immediately – they can go 4-6 hours. The pups trying to nurse will usually bring the milk in.

    Relax – it’s going to be a long night. Just watch the pups as the next pup comes, usually I have a warm box to hold the pups in while a new pup is coming. Then I put them back as the mom relaxes between deliveries.

    As the delivery goes on, you can offer a few tablespoons of cold yogurt or ice cream for energy as the mother dog tires.

    When you think the delivery is over, do have mom checked by the vet tomorrow – retained pups are BAD for mom and her pups.
