Getting The Best Dog Bed
If you own a dog, especially an older one, getting a good dog bed is a really great gift to give your beloved pet. The need a good place to rest and sleep just like us. After all, you wouldn't want to bed down in an uncomfortable mattress or sleep on a hard surface all night.
Sleeping on the floor or even on a bad or uneven bed isn't the best thing for a dog to do. As they get older it becomes even more important that they have a really good dog bed to sleep in.
The other reason to get a dog bed is, of course, to keep them off of yours or off of the best couch in the house. If you don't want them all over your furniture, get them a comfortable bed of their own that they will love and use for a long time.
From the simplest dog beds to the more elaborate types, there are many to choose from. Some are more or less like large bean bags, some are donuts or round pet beds. There are also bolster dog beds, which have sort of a pillow going all around the outer edge of the bed. Dogs like to use this as a pillow for their head while they sleep. Then there is the orthopedic dog bed and memory foam beds, which are among the best you can get.
There are also outdoor dog beds which are made for outdoor areas like the back porch and there are also heated dog beds. These are great for dogs, especially during the cold winter months. Even when you have the heat in the house cranked up, the floor can sometimes stay cold and it's not good for your dogs bones and joints. A heated dog bed will keep your canine pal comfy and warm the whole time like a warm blanket.
Another option you may want to look into is getting a waterproof dog bed. We have all taken our dog out for a walk when it is raining and wet outside. Whether we want to or not, we have to go out on those miserable days when the rain is pouring and we both get soaked. After a good towel dry, dogs still have some moisture left on their coat and skin. The nice part about a waterproof dog bed is that your dog can lay on this type of pet bed without getting it soaked on the inside where the water stays put. These beds are made for this so they do not get ruined every time your water soaked pooch rests on them. For those dogs that prefer to stay out on the porch or outside near their kennel or dog house, they are much happier on a waterproof bed than a conventional one that soaks up the water. It's not only a comfortable resting spot for sleeping and lying down, but it will last longer too.
Not all dog beds are the same just as not all dogs age the same. When your dog gets older, he or she will most likely develop the same types of aches and pains due to joint problems that humans do. When your dog starts to slow down due to joint pain, inflammation and arthritis, the best thing you can do is to look into getting them a memory foam dog bed.
As soon as your are aware that you dog is suffering from orthopedic issues, the floor is simply not a good place for them to sleep. Even a conventional dog bed just will not do. The even balance of a dog's weight is more important at this stage of their life than at any time before. A bumpy or uneven bed is not good for the existing joint pain and can actually worsen the dog's problems over time.

Your dog should be fine. I have both of my dogs sleep with me every night under the covers. They actually dig their way under the covers so I know they like it. If they get to hot or can’t breath they get up and put their heads outside the covers or go to the side of the bed. They know instinctively when they can’t breath or when they want more air. As long as your dog isn’t trapped under the covers he/she will be fine. I sleep with it so cold in my room that if my dogs aren’t under the covers they get too cold. Let your dog pick where he/she wants to be and they will know what to do from there.

my five pound dog has been doing this for six years and she is still alive and kicking! i say let your dog sleep under the covers for the rest of its life! i know i will let mine!

put your head under there, if you can breathe so can he

If he starts to have trouble breathing, he’ll wake up, struggle to get free, and it will wake you up. Lots of dogs and cats sleep that way.

If he was having trouble breathing, he woud begin to panic.

If i were you i wouldnt let my dog sleep on the bed anymore. Better to be safe than sorry.

Don’t worry about it, Michele: If he can’t breathe, he’ll get out from under the covers.

My old dog used to do this. Even to the point where she would pant. She loved it though and it never did her any harm. Am sure your dog will be fine just check he has easy access out of the covers if he gets too hot. Am sure he’ll let you know if he wants to get out.

Oxygen is able to sift thru the layers of blankets. He is fine under the covers. We have chihuahuas and they love to be under the covers. I never lost one like that yet.

My cat sleeps this way too. WAY at the bottom of the bed, next to my husband FEET! (yuck) She likes to wrap around them. I always ask him, "Can she breathe down there?" I ask him every night…and he always says…."YES" I think he is getting tired of me asking him. So, now I say "are you SURE, she can breathe down there?” And he just looks at me like I am an idiot.

Our chihuahua-mix does this — no problem.
We also have 2 cats that like to sleep under the covers (away from the dog) — no problem.
When they get too hot, (or can’t breathe?) they just wiggle out the side of the bed.

My dog does the same quit worrying, dogs have sense enough to know if they can’t breath. If they can’t breath, they will move out from under the covers. Dogs tuck their noses into themsevles to heat the air they breath, it helps them stay warm.

I worry about the same thing. My dogs come out from under the covers sometimes as if they are coming up from the bottom of the ocean. I have even created airways into them from the sides of the bed by manipulating the covers. I know that is silly.
You’ll never stop worrying about your dogs, but trust in their instincts and you might get a little better rest.

I have 2 beagle dogs. One sleeps in the bed and the other sleeps on top. It is totally crazy how they both have different preferences. Trust me, your dog would let you know if he couldn’t breathe. The dog that sleeps under my covers, when he gets too hot he actually crawls out from the covers and hops back on top.

He will be alright, Dogs are denning animals and they want to feel warm and secure. Mine do the same, I have one that sleeps under the blankets and one that sleeps on top of the blankets.

I have two Jack Russells and they too sleep under the covers all night. Some dogs (especially Jacks) love to be under the cover. Mine will move on top of the bed in the middle of the night when they get too hot. Then they will go back under after like 20 minutes. They will move if they get too hot.
