My house-broken dog keeps having 'accidents'?

Posted September 1st, 2010 by admin

We have a two-year old Shih Tzu who is generally well-behaved and can usually be trusted not to pee in the house. She is very good for sitting at the back door to let us know when she needs out, and she gets several walks a day. However, in the last month, she’s had 3 accidents on the sofa (which we eventually had to get rid of), 2 on the bed, and a few on the carpet. Although there isn’t really any reason for the change, I’m thinking its more behavioural than a physical problem, because it doesn’t happen ALL the time.
What could be causing her to be so careless lately?
Its strange because she doesn’t seem to pee on the floor, just on valuable things like our bed and the sofa.

if your 2 year old shih tzu has been consistently housebroken for 2 years and only recently started having mistakes i would think have a vet check … but the things she is urinating on are things that smell like her owners and that could be behavioural … if over the past two years she has had the occasional accident she was never fully housebroken or she was given the opportunity to pee in the house a few too many times … i do not think she is being careless, she either has a UTI, she was never fully housebroken, or she is marking your bed and sofa to claim you … i would rule out the UTI first if it were my dog and next i would control the access the dog has to the house … if the dog can not be supervised, she needs to be crated … she should not be allowed on the sofa or bed … if the dog sleeps in your bed that is a problem because she already sees that as her place and to break that until she is housebroken (any dog that goes to the bathroom in the house, unless it was left for 18 hours or something, is NOT housebroken) could be a challenge … i had a roommate once whose dog would urinate on the sofa … my sofa … my brand new sofa … and i told my roommate the dog would no longer be allowed up on my sofa … he was annoyed, thought it was cruel … i went out and bought a doggie sofa and put it right in front of my sofa so he could be near but not ruining my furniture … maybe you could try that until the dog is housebroken (if it is not a UTI) … good luck …

Tell your vet about this. It could very well be a medical issue going on to cause this.

Hi I would say there may be the smell of something different on the items she is peeing on or in fact that she may have a UTI urinary tract infection or a bladder infection. If she has been spayed lately they could have clipped her bladder in surgery. you may want to consult a vet at least for a urine dip to see if she has a UTI

It could be behavioral. But it also could be a UTI. I would take her to the vet when you can and have an urinalysis done to be sure. Good luck.

If she is peeing in her sleep, she could be incontinent. Any time a house trained dog starts peeing in the house a trip to the vet is in order.

When a house-broken dog does this, there is usually a medical reason. Take your dog to the vet and have her examined. It could be bladder infection or bladder stones or crystals starting to form in ther bladder. Take her urine sample to the vet, if you can.

My dog did this and he is totally house broken. He peed in my walk-in closet. Then later I found that he peed on my bed! He has never done this before. So I took him to the vet and it turned out he had a mild case of bladder infection and crystals in his urine. He took some meds and I changed his diet (per vet’s recommendation) and he is fine now. No accidents at all!

I thought he was doing this because he was mad at me (I had to work late that day). But I was wrong–he was really ill. :( So have your baby checked by a vet. Good luck.
