My pug is 8 weeks old, and I’m considering getting some insurance for his healthcare. Pug owners: would you recommend pet insurance as far as its money saving benefits, and what insurance plan would you recommend?

Getting The Best Dog Bed
If you own a dog, especially an older one, getting a good dog bed is a really great gift to give your beloved pet. The need a good place to rest and sleep just like us. After all, you wouldn't want to bed down in an uncomfortable mattress or sleep on a hard surface all night.
Sleeping on the floor or even on a bad or uneven bed isn't the best thing for a dog to do. As they get older it becomes even more important that they have a really good dog bed to sleep in.
The other reason to get a dog bed is, of course, to keep them off of yours or off of the best couch in the house. If you don't want them all over your furniture, get them a comfortable bed of their own that they will love and use for a long time.
From the simplest dog beds to the more elaborate types, there are many to choose from. Some are more or less like large bean bags, some are donuts or round pet beds. There are also bolster dog beds, which have sort of a pillow going all around the outer edge of the bed. Dogs like to use this as a pillow for their head while they sleep. Then there is the orthopedic dog bed and memory foam beds, which are among the best you can get.
There are also outdoor dog beds which are made for outdoor areas like the back porch and there are also heated dog beds. These are great for dogs, especially during the cold winter months. Even when you have the heat in the house cranked up, the floor can sometimes stay cold and it's not good for your dogs bones and joints. A heated dog bed will keep your canine pal comfy and warm the whole time like a warm blanket.
Another option you may want to look into is getting a waterproof dog bed. We have all taken our dog out for a walk when it is raining and wet outside. Whether we want to or not, we have to go out on those miserable days when the rain is pouring and we both get soaked. After a good towel dry, dogs still have some moisture left on their coat and skin. The nice part about a waterproof dog bed is that your dog can lay on this type of pet bed without getting it soaked on the inside where the water stays put. These beds are made for this so they do not get ruined every time your water soaked pooch rests on them. For those dogs that prefer to stay out on the porch or outside near their kennel or dog house, they are much happier on a waterproof bed than a conventional one that soaks up the water. It's not only a comfortable resting spot for sleeping and lying down, but it will last longer too.
Not all dog beds are the same just as not all dogs age the same. When your dog gets older, he or she will most likely develop the same types of aches and pains due to joint problems that humans do. When your dog starts to slow down due to joint pain, inflammation and arthritis, the best thing you can do is to look into getting them a memory foam dog bed.
As soon as your are aware that you dog is suffering from orthopedic issues, the floor is simply not a good place for them to sleep. Even a conventional dog bed just will not do. The even balance of a dog's weight is more important at this stage of their life than at any time before. A bumpy or uneven bed is not good for the existing joint pain and can actually worsen the dog's problems over time.

Pet insurance is a good thing. One serious injury can cost $1500 and up. Do your research before signing up though. Some companies won’t cover anything that is "genetic", and it is easy to throw almost all illnesses into that box. Pugs can suffer from many different problems that may need to be corrected surgically (elongated soft palate/stenotic nares/collapsing trachea/patellar luxation). I don’t own pug, but we had one die on us two weeks ago to heat exhaustion, and her emergency medical bill was $700 (it would have been more like $3000 closer to the city).

I am not a pug owner, but a dog owner with pet insurance. We have VPI.
The thing to remember is that with any plan, you will pay full price up front and then submit a claim for reimbursement. I pay around $30 a month for full coverage.
VPI does have a set amount of money that they pay for each procedure, vaccine, etc. So they only pay a portion of your total bill. I just had annual shots done, and I paid $150. VPI will probably reimburse me $75 or $80.
That said, last year my dog developed a bad bacterial infection and had to go to the Emergency Vet. I walked out with a bill of close to $1500. I was reimbursed $1200 of that. I had had the policy for a year at that point, so $30 x 12 is $360.00. You can see that I made out, big time.
All in all, I would recommend it. Just make sure to read the fine print and get a policy that will work for you.

First I would make sure the vet accepts insurance, some of my friends have insurance and they canceled because it took to long to get money back etc..or not everything was covered.
I’m not a pug owner but I don’t have health insurance for my yorkie, before I got him I saved up for at a couple of years and opened a bank account that will only be used for his care should there be an emergency and also have a credit card.
And before I think about buying something on impulse anything found at the mall unless it’s necessary I add that money to the bank account that I have set aside for him.
When I was checking out insurance before I got him and was trying to get quotes, I was told that a dog can’t get insurance till it was at least 12 weeks old

I have "petcare insurance"….they are very easy to work with and pay thier claims. My only beef is that they have raised the deuctible from $50 to $75…….so I have to pay the first $75.
Also be aware, the insurance covers accidents or injuries only. (kennel cough, obstructions, lacerations)
It does not cover things lie checkups or vaccinations.
Overall it has been a good dela and has prevented me from having to pay for the large bills my dog has run up with her injuries.

Oh yah Pugs rule owner of a pug for 2 yrs. Well to answer your question yes pet insurance is always great!

I insure with the ol’ envelope in the bottom of the vet supplies box. I keep about $300 in there, as that is enough to cover most emergencies.
Consensus seems to be that pet health insurance is a rip-off.
Good luck with you new baby!

I don’t have a dog – I have a cat. But I find that pet insurance is good for any pet owner, just to be safe. My cat is only 10 months old but I find that pet insurance is a small price to pay to protect your loved one. I think I only pay about $15 a month and it covers vet fees for accidental injuries, boarding fees if you have to unexpectedly go away for an emergency, etc. You never know what might happen, right?

I considered getting pet insurance, but I heard that it was a big rip-off because the policies typically only cover certain procedures. In the end, the cost of the policy outweighs the benefits.

Pet insurance can be a benefit to a pet owner, but you have to do your research before you buy a policy. Not all policies are alike. As you narrow the field to a few companies you are interested in, I would suggest calling the front runners on the phone and asking some specific questions. Maybe even have an example condition that you ask how the coverage would pan out for (ie dog swallows part of a chew toy). This way you know up front what you are getting for your money.
Also, spend a little time reading about some of the terms used in policies. Wikipedia has a good entry on pet insurance. Doing a search for some pet insurance sites can be beneficial too.
One very important thing to remember, that many people misunderstand, is that pet insurance is not like human health insurance. It is really more like car insurance, where you get reimbursed after something happens.
Good luck in your research
