I am about to get a pet rat and i was wondering if laying down newspaper and shredded paper would be alright. and if it is, how often would i need to change it? (probably two female rats)

you want carefresh bedding from any store (petsmart, petco, etc.) Don’t use pine or ceder, I forget which but one of them is poisonous. Probably Cedar. shredded newspaper is not good for them. No fabric either, the threads can choke them, and if you get a wheel, make sure you hang it upside down or get a wodent wheel, yes wodent, because their tails and feet can get caught in wire wheels. Carefresh bedding is made of recycled paper and you should change their cage once a week.

No newspaper – the ink/fumes are harmful to them. And definitely NO cedar shavings! You can use clean towels/rags until you get proper bedding material. Our rats liked the bedding made from corn cobs.

it depends , rats react different some may find it appealing as others may chew on it which can make them very ill. i suggest you get the recommended bedding at a nearby pet store , its only going to cost you about 15 dollars but hey thats better than losing a rat

Newspaper ink is harmful to them. It causes respiratory problems. Paper might geive them cuts. I suggest you get carefresh. It maybe be a little expensive, but it works really well! Or you can get aspen!

Well Even though i have guinea pigs, i don’t believe that using recycled shredded newspaper would harm a small rodent. i use CAREFRESH ULTRA WHITE PET BEDDING, it is super absorbency, and has superior odor control!

We use pine bedding for all of our rodents. We get it from farm & fleet for $6 for 5.5 cubic feet. We have used shredded news paper for our rats and they are okay with it. They don’t eat or chew on it, however your rats may choose to and could make them sick.
