Rehoming Fee vs Adoption Fee?

Posted May 6th, 2010 by admin

Rehoming should cover for vet shots and expenses on the dogs.

Adoption Fee, should it really be a high price?

Why pay 100-500 if the dog is not 1) Spayed/ Neutered 2) Have first or any rounds first shots 3) Miscellaneous (toys, dog beds, etc…)

Adoption fee should not be a price on a dog, anyone can pick a stray up one day and sell it the next day making a profit. Not a supporter, but that is the truth.

Now there are educated and experienced breeders that make profit for "contributing" to healthy well temperament dog breeds. Let’s not touch on that.

So should we really sell a dog for so much if we only invested little on it or nothing at all? Why pay a high "rehoming fee" for an un-"fixed" pet? We could spend that cost on having it get its shots and fixing..
This question did come from looking at Craig list adverts.

I know there are many … many, on there that want profit. I want to get all perspective that I can, just don’t think of craig list too much(why it was not mentioned)

First off, I’m not making any claims like I know, I just want to say what I thought the fees meant. Also, don’t count craigslist. That’s full of greedy individuals out for profit. Not all, but many.

Re-homing (I take it from an individual person) SHOULD just cover medical expenses (including getting fixed). Not food or other supplies. Also, an individual should ask for a decent amount to prevent another person just getting it to turn a profit. That decent amount is the cost of being fixed & shots.

A rescue group though, they spend a lot of money on health care that often costs more than the adoption fee. Not in all cases. But I figured they find an average to go on. Around here, heart worms are very common. Many of the rescued dogs have needed to be treated for that before being ready for adoption. If you pay to treat that you are looking at $500+. Yet they may only ask for $250 for the adoption fee. Plus they were fixed and got shots and all.

Shelters have rent, utilities, likely some advertising, and costs directly related to the animals.

What UHave2BeKiddingMe says sounds so shady. I never heard of that before. I might guess that they could be encouraging the adoptions of less adoptable pets, like the mutts and older ones. I guess I’m trying to give them the benefit of the doubt because that comes across pretty bad.

  2. Hi

Keep in mind you are not paying for an item you are paying for a best friend sure you could go pick one up on the streets but why not save ones life plus most money is going towards taking care of the rest of the animals plus paying bills so unless you are going to adopt all the animals then the prices should remain high… haha please understand I am saying this in a nice tone not mean……

Most adoption fees are not over 200 dollars and they do pay for the shots and fixing. I don’t really know of any adoption organizations that would not fix their dogs before adopting them out. That would be counter productive.

Are you talking about like craigslist and that sort of thing?

Not really sure what your question is.

Re-homing generally means the owners is giving their own pet away at a fee which should only be for recent vet costs to assist pet into a new home. $50 – $100

Adoption usually is a shelter/rescue(depending on each one & funding) houses & fully vets each pet. Their fees can range $100 – $500. Their fee includes vet fees & a portion of all costs in maintaining all pets as all do not cost the same amount of money to get them healthy enough to be adopted.

I have no problem paying the fee to a shelter/rescue however I would not pay an owner a high fee for taking on their lifetime responsibility.the shelter/rescue are aiding the pets – the pets are not theirs

The only dog I took from an owner was free. They were glad to find a good home for him.

One just needs to call it what it is SELLING a dog.

There is no such thing as "adopting"

I do not care what a rescue or private person charges to sell a dog, that is up to them.

Rescues in Southern California charge $200-$750 and more to buy a dog from them.

Here is a quote from our local Beagle rescue on what they charge when you buy a dog from them- please note their MARKETING strategy- they charge more for young purebreds. It has nothing to do with "adopting" its about a sale.

From the Beagles and Buddies website….

"Donations range from $150-$750 depending on the age and breed….. therefore, puppy and pure-bred donations, which are higher,…..

The Pomeranian rescue near me is $500 to buy one of their dogs.

There is nothing wrong with making a profit either, if someone is willing to pay the price, so be it. Whether it be a rescue or someone who no longer wants their dog.(what you call rehoming)

I have no idea why there are people who spend their day flagging ads on craigslist for people who want to sell their dogs. Its really not their business.

There is nothing wrong with selling a dog, they are personal prorperty and that is how the law treats them.
