Siberian Husky destroying bed?

Posted August 24th, 2010 by admin

I have a year and a half old siberian husky. She’s very cute, just so sweet and with a very vibrant personality. Most of the time, she’s well behaved, but when we got her a new pet bed, she started destroying the mattress. She hasn’t slept in a bed for a long time, although she did when we first got her. But when she was growing as a puppy, she got a little too big and started to destroy the bed.

Now she has a new bed which is twice her size (so she can stretch around in it), but she keeps biting the mattress and when she is going to bed she doesn’t sleep in it (she sleeps on the floor). And when I put it in the place she normally sleeps, she goes to her other sleeping spot; and when I put it there, she goes to the other sleeping spot besides that (around my room she has 3 different sleeping spots depending on whether she feels cold or not).

So lately she’s torn a huge whole in the mattress (actually its more like a pillow) and sometimes she likes to sit in the bed to rip out the stuffings.

Does anybody know how to stop this destructive husky behaviour. PS this is the first time I’ve had a dog live indoors but this is the only problem that has turned up since we got her (when she was 11 weeks old), except the fact that she taught herself to open doors and doesn’t close them afterwards.

Yep, huskies are destructive when bored. Is she getting her required daily hour long non-stop fast-paced run? If not, she needs to be. She is a hardcore working dog. A pet-quality husky can run 20 miles in one day. A working husky can tavel up to 100 miles in a 24 hour period if they are motivated enough. Your dog likely needs more mental and physical stimulation. Start taking her for long runs. If she’s good on a leash, take her along for a bike ride.

As previously said, a bored husky is a destructive husky. Some chew on drywall in the walls, some chew up paper, some chew up their beds. Be thankful she isn’t bored enough to destroy your furniture :P . Some are just plain mellow in the house despite no exercise at all, but they’re still bored out of their skulls.

Don’t buy her another bed. Dispose of the one she is destroying. My APBT and Golden do not have beds anymore. They both have destroyed 3 beds, one was supposed to be ‘indestructible’.

Sounds like she prefers the floor. She does not have to have a bed, dear.

Big dogs have the Habit of destroying things such as beds and pillows this will go away…

She’s bored. She probably needs to get out more to stimulate her mind. Huskies are very smart animals, as you know, if she can open doors. I would buy her some brain stimulating toys, the ones where you put in the food and she has to earn it. Also try to take her out more and give her as much exercise you can. We have to take my dog out to run 3 times a day, so that he doesn’t get into things. Good luck.

Perhaps she is showing you some destructive behavior. Maybe she needs a little more excercise or chew items. Or maybe she just is smelling something in the matress that she doesn’t like and she detroys it and stears clear of it. If you insist on keeping it for her put a old blanket in it that smells like you, this might help her.

A bored Husky is a destructive Husky.

Clearly your dog is lacking in exercise and mental stimulation.

I am absolutely shocked that anyone would research this breed and think it was the type of dog that could be happily kept indoors.

This is only the start of the destruction. Huskies get very creative when they are bored.

How do you stop it? You go out and get a house with a yard for your dog, and you provide it with enough to keep it busy.
