We took in a starved, skin and bones, stray female maltese dog about 5 weeks ago, and we’ve been taking good care of her. We’ve fed her well and shes been showing Weight gain and less visibility of her ribs. She still feels bony to the touch, and i noticed she hasn’t continued to gain more meat on her bones and continues to hold a bony figure, but not as much as how we found her. But on the other hand, she continues to gain figure in her belly. I noticed one day as she walked passed me that her sides seemed out of the ordinary. i picked her up and sat down with her and felt that her belly was firm. i thought maybe she was just bloated. But its been a full week and she continues to have a firm stomach, although, this time, its just a little firmer and rounder and her nipples are very visible and seemingly swollen (though they were like that when we rescued her). Lately, shes been acting strange and hides under the beds in the house or in dark places. I had a feeling she might have been pregnant when we brought her home. i researched and was convinced she was pregnant. Her strange behavior was listed in the symptoms of dog pregnancies. By my research, i estimate that she is about 5-6 weeks pregnant. We guess that maybe she tied with another dog while she was a stray. We have no idea who the father could be. But my only worry is her condition. By the looks of her appearance when we found her, she looks like she was lost for about a week or two. She devoured the food we gave her and drank her fill of water. When we bathed her, it was a sad sight to see her true skeleton like body when the water pressed down her fur. We cant afford to get veterinary help since our other dog came out of an expensive surgery for crucial ligament repair just a few days ago.
Could the time she’d spent starving and parched have already began to affect the developing puppies?

Is there anything i can do for her at home to better help her?
Any over the counter vitamins?

Is there any veterinary place, free-of-charge or of the least expense, that i can maybe go to get her checked?

Any suggestions, information, recommendations, …etc would be absolutely helpful.

Thank You!

She HAS to see a vet. She could be having a false pregnancy. She could be wormy. She could indeed be pregnant, and to a much larger dog, and the pups may be too big for her. If you really, really can’t afford it, turn her over to a shelter or rescue. She’s going to likely need serious vet care.

ADDED: Some people obviously don’t know it’s against YA terms of service to pretend to be someone they are not? Like a vet in training who would recommend regular low fat milk for a neonate puppy.

Lots of pet store have vet clinics inside of them check them out or ask for an animal help center number

What about your local humane society?

surely you do have an animal shelter there, if you can’t afford a vet and you are pretty sure that she’s pregnant, take her to the animal shelter or call around to vets and see if they will keep her and find a good home for her and her pups if she whelps before they can find a home for her alone. Some vets will do it as long as the new owner will cover the cost of the the medical care and food.

Glad you took her in to save her from starvation, but If you can’t afford a vet for her you should give her to someone who can or surrender her to a no-kill shelter.

If you can’t afford a vet, you can’t afford to care properly for the puppies since they will require veterinary care before they can be weaned. And should the female have a problem delivery, she would also need a vet for a very expensive C-Section.

Get her somewhere where she can be properly cared for.

You might check with your local shelter for help with this dog. You could also check with breed rescues. Do you really want to keep her & have to deal with puppies & the expenses? I commend you for taking her in.

Some vets will take in stray such as the one you found. Only some will turn away a dog that will most likely die without their help, and if so they are truly only in the vet business for the money, not for their love of animals. With that said, try calling the vets and rescue clinics around you, one of them has to know where you can take him/her. Many vets know of people just like yourself who as a hobby take in strays and return them to their healthy selves to be adopted. Just call around. Good luck!

She needs to see a vet. She needs to have an abort/spay. She needs to have an ultrasound. If you cannot afford to do this, I suggest that you surrender her to a breed rescue. What will you do if she should have problems whelping? How will you afford that?

Call around and ask for quotes from vets to get a sense of price. You should at some point see a vet, just for her puppies’ sake.

To help her gain weight, put her on a puppy food. Puppy food has more fats and proteins. You can even mix in some puppy formula or Nutri-Cal (High calorie supplement) into her food.

You will know she has reached the correct weight when you can run your hand down her body and not feed bones sticking out.

give her to a non-kill shelter and check on her

Its a good thing you found her in time.

Well first of all your doing great with her feeding, make sure she eats about 1-3 cups a day(since she’s going to be feeding more dogs soon)
and make sure she stays hydrated.Secondly, maybe some vitamin c and e,and maybe try asking your local humane socciaty about her, they could have lots of tips for you about how to take care of her.

    Good luck :)

You call Maltese Rescue immediately. http://americanmaltese.org/ama_rescue.htm You release the dog to them and let them deal with everything.

If they cannot take the dog, you go to http://www.petfinder.com and start calling every no-kill rescue group (not shelters) that within 500 miles of you.

You can also start sifting through all the different Yahoo! Groups that specialize in Maltese dogs. http://groups.yahoo.com/search?query=maltese+dog I see right on the front page a rescue organization in "North Central". If you are not in that area, I bet they could give you a contact in your area.

Added: I’m bothered by the fact that this dog has been in your care for 5 weeks, but has not seen a vet because you can’t afford one. This dog should have been given to rescue 5 weeks ago. Please, do the right thing now and start calling rescue groups.

Try a Maltese Rescue league. They will vet her properly and test for all sorts of ailments that she may already have. She could have worms, heart worm, and need all shots. They are equipped to foster her and pups and find screened homes for the her and pups. Glad you took her in. You truly have tried to nurse her back to a proper weight. You can try boiled chicken, rice and holistic dog food. Howevre, she needs a Vet right away to evaluate her. Not only her, but when the pups are born what are you going to do? Poor little thing. Hope you all fare well. Angel Wolf 13
