What can I use in substitute for a litter box?

Posted September 1st, 2010 by admin

I’m asking this for a friend.

So our dog just got to our cat’s litter box and TOTALLY tore it into shreds. Our kind neighbor is a vet, and he checked our dog out and said that he didn’t swallow anything and that he was going to be fine. But, we still have one ittty-bitty little problem. We’re don’t have a litter box, OR any litter. So here’s my question. What can we use for a litter box and litter? Something cheap, and regular household items. Like, a shoebox or a regular box for the litter box or something. All the stores are closed around us. Preferably cheap and we can use long term. Also, my cat uses a box for a bed too so will it get too confusing? Thanks!

A cookie sheet or roasting pan makes a great emergency, or a shallow box lined with a plastic bag –unless you are the Jolly Green Giant, a shoe box will probably be a bit small.

As for litter, plain old sand or dirt…cats have been using it for thousands of years. Also, shredded newspaper usually works well. If you know anyone who has a wood pellet stove, ask them for some wood pellets…wood pellets make great litter and is the same stuff as Feline Pine but way cheaper

just use a large cardboard box and cut the sides down as low as they need to be. fill it with newspapers. but you probably wont be able to use it long-term. you should buy a new litterbox as soon as possible.

Any kind of box will work, and no your cat wont get confused. At least, he/she really shouldn’t… not with kitty litter in it.

And as someone else said, definitely get a new kitty litter box because eventually that one will get really gross at the bottom. :)

    Good luck!
