what do you think?

Posted May 4th, 2010 by admin

I hear people say that dogs should NEVER be allowed to have free access to the sofa or bed because it allows them to think that they are the leader. however, my dogs are allowed on the furnature and are very well behaved. i’m not going to say they are PERFECT but i’m not sure any dog is. do you think a dog can have free access to furnature and still understand the pecking order of the household and be well behaved dogs?

Most dogs can. Mine do. However, if you have a challenging dog, it is sometimes wiser to give them no opportunity to try to get one over on you.

Dogs can be on furniture. They need to know that when you say, ‘off’, they need to get off.

I do think they can understand!

My 2 dogs are allowed on the couches and on my bed and they still have the same pecking order.

    Oh yes definately.
Our dog has free access and sleeps on the bottom of our bed at nights (shes a Cairn, so only little) and she KNOWS whose the boss.

i think that if you let your dogs do that, then you are the leader. because you could always tell them to stop..

I don’t think it makes them believe they are top in the pecking order. I let my dogs on the couch and they stil lrespect me jsut the same plus it’s fun :) .

Mine are allowed on my furniture! They get off when I tell them and I have no problems.

This is tricky, I disagree and agree here’s why Sure, as long as you train them well enough and make sure they don’t GO on the furniture. And No because when they think they can just go on the furniture and lay there, it becomes a habit and you guys wouldn’t look good when the guests are around and it shows that they are in the lead and they can do anything they want. So….yea that’s what I think

I think it is dumb! All my dogs are large couch potatoes, and they are all VERY well trained. They have all been in obedience classes since the day they came home.

I think they can. I allow my dog on the furniture and she understands the pecking order.

Yes I do. My dogs are allowed on the couch and bed, but know that they have to get off when I say so. Plus, when we’re on the couch, I have to set them down anyways to help prevent any back problems. :) But when I set them down, they know not to try to jump back up. They also have a ramp up to the bed for when I am gone during the day. I think it’s fine to allow dogs on the furniture. My dogs are very well behaved and know that I am the leader, not them, even though I do let them on the furniture at my say so.

I don’t think any dog is perfectly behaved.
But they will still know who is boss.
Mine get on the couch, on the bed, on the chair… but NEVER on the table or in the Kitchen chairs. They know the difference…
I am not sure if I am the alpha leader or the cat… but I do know that the dogs differ to me (and the cat).
So let them be your fur children…. on the furniture, as long as they get off when you tell them to.

yes I do . my dog sleeps on my bed , and when we are alone at home I used to let her sleep on the couch but my parent’s , don’t like that . so she doesn’t even try to jump on the couch . but if she wants to cuddle , she’ll try to jump up .

    Of course.
    What is a lap dog?
And do all lap dogs become the Alpha controlling their humans?
There is a lot more to canine behavior than just simple one size fits all rules. Such rules don’t apply with canines any more than they apply with people. Dogs have body language just like we do. If your good at understanding it, you will know what works for you and the dogs your dealing with
