What is attacking my dog?

Posted May 11th, 2010 by admin

I kept finding what I thought were bed bugs in my bed. I laid down a sheet made of dryer sheets because I know no bugs will go near dryer sheets. One morning I found seven "bed bugs" in my bed but had no bites. I assume they were biting my dog since her body temp is higher than mine. After I laid the dryer sheet sheet down, I have not seen any. I still get bites but they do not itch and I do not see them so I don’t really care. Tonight I was sitting on my bedroom rug and when I went back into the dining room I found a "bed bug" on the back of my leg but it did not bite me. I put my dog outside for fifteen minutes to go to the bathroom and when she came back in I found a "bed bug" under her armpit. She’s a short-haired pit-mix by the way. It looked exactly like all of the other bugs I found in my bed a couple weeks ago. Everything I read online says dogs cannot bring in bed bugs so what are they?
The bugs are small, round (about the size of a dippin’ dot or button candy) brown/dark colored and I think they have eight legs. Its definitely not a spider.
What are they and how can I treat this?
Also, I live in Hawaii if that matters.

They sound like ticks. Your dog probably is tracking them in from outside. Ticks can transmit disease, you need to get rid of them now. Drier sheets aren’t going to do anything. Check your dog every day thoroughly for ticks. They will likely be on his legs and ears. Also have someone check you as well. You should also be using a monthly preventative on your dog like frontline.

They sound too big to be fleas. And if your just getting bit, it can’t be ticks.
I’m not sure what the hell it is but, I’d be going down to my local garden center and getting some insect repellent to use on the lawn and whatnot around your place. That or call Orkin.

if they are round then it sounds like a tick. Ticks start drinking blood after 24 hours since they’ve attached. If you cant afford tick and flea meds I reccomend you to use apple cider vinegar, mix with with water and spray your dog before every time you let her outside. Its great for the skin and fur and it scares away ticks and fleas. It also recomended to add into pets water but its not too good for the teeth so I dont do that, but yeah, we go to the parks a lot and 1 time I didnt spray her she had 3 ticks, when I spray her-nothing
