Animals in the wild huddle together to share warmth. Kittens or puppies do this, they sleep together in a big pile. Your cat sleeps against your back because he knows if you move it will be in the other direction. (Our cat climbs down between us under the covers, then he stretches out sideways so his front paws are touching one of us and his back paws the other, so he knows where both of us are.)

I think there is also an element of ‘ownership’. Your cat is ‘claiming’ you.

    Same as above

Animals love to feel that you’re there for them. It’s also a really good place to keep warm :)

Cats are like children, they like to be kept warm and feel as if they are secure and safe. Your cat sleeping against your back, it allows it to sleep comfortably, and yourself, also touching you makes it certain that you’re there and not going anywhere. Some cats, who sleep at the stomach, they like to feel surrounded, like the womb. My cat, however, liked my pulse and the warmth above my chest. He didn’t sleep above my chest but he slept right at the side of my neck, because it’s warm and safe. I didnt like it, so I moved him, and he slept at my back ever since. It just shows your pet that you love them, and security is what they need. Try giving them a space on the blanket, if you dont like it. Make sure that they are cuddled up. My other cat slept in the crook of my legs, near the back of my knees;.
