my lab/pit bull mix is around 2 years old, and everytime i scratch behind his ears, or rub his tummy, he finds the closest thing (usually a pillow, blanket, or the couch/bed) and nibbles on it. i cant seem to get it to stop. anyone know what causes this behavior? my brothers pit bull puppy is starting to do this as well.

He was taken from his mom to soon. The sucking of nursing was not satisfied while he was a small pup. Now he searches for something to nibble on when he is content.

My 10 year old Cockapoo does the same thing; except she licks. If she’s by a wall when I pet her, she’ll lick it. Same with blankets… people… carpet… wood… anything.

I think it’s a form of expressing pleasure and satisfaction. :)

I know when my dog jumps in bed if anyone lying on their side or even if your knees are bent he instantly wants to hump you and when I make him stop he does this biting when he trys to hump I just assumed when they are mounting another dog they may nibble or bite at the neck of the other dog I guess its like foreplay or something that comes along with the excitement of the moment

They’re "nursing" like they used to with their mom in affect.

My cat kneads when I pet him, and he is really happy.

Same thing with dogs. It’s a very natural thing!

My cat des the same thing. They equate this to their mother grooming them while they were nursing. It’s a soothing feeling to them.
