She’s just trying to fluff it up to get it comfy, my two Labs do the same.

It is just a behavior that dogs have had forever. It goes back to making a bed just right for them by scratching whatever the surface may be into a comfortable spot for them. They do not have the higher reasoning to know that the couch is not going to change for them.

They are trying to get comfy. Naturally they would dig up a whole, or material to lay it. So, its just a weird qwerk.

My dogs do that all the time and they are all 4 in bed with us they are just trying to get comfy and that is their way of doing it. My 3 little ones crawl under the covers and will dig tell they get comfy and my big boy will lay on top of the covers. Boy are we glad he doesnt try to crawl under the blankets like the little ones seeing as how he weighs almost 100 lbs. lol

It is just part of their natural instint. Dogs try to make the surface they are laying on as soft as possible. it is natural for them to try to create a den. It is nothing to worry about at all.

Because in the wild tho do that to make their beds, where they sleep, and make them free of sticks/sharp objects. Also when they lick, its a way to mark territory. Its just an instinct!

How old is your dog? My two puppies are 16-17 weeks and are teething, so they chew furniture (table, couch legs, corners of the wall that are sticking out) What i did was bought a certain paint that when the puppies go to eat the wood, it dosent taste soo good….Another way i’ve heard is to take pickle juice, put it on a face cloth and rub the object with the cloth, or take an onion and rub the item, That way the taste isint soo good when she bits it.

It’s completely natural…I believe it’s called nesting. It’s what they would do in the wild..scratch an area on the ground to make it comfortable. My dog does it too.

Does she scratch and lick AFTER she lays down or BEFORE? It makes a difference.
If she does it before she lays down, she’s probably trying to build a sort of "nest" to lay in.
If she does it after she lays down, she probably scents something (like spilled food crumbs) that she’s scratching up and licking off.
If she does it after she lays down, you can probably stop her by telling her no and making her get down from the bed or couch. But don’t yell at her or punish her for doing what you’ve always allowed her to do - just tell her no and make her get down. She’ll soon understand that licking and scratching is not acceptable behavior, and will stop it.
